Written by Tara

In short, you should not apply a gel top coat to your regular nail polish since regular nail polish has a long drying time and gel polish will trap moisture under the top coat. We recommend that you stick with a regular base coat and top coat when painting your nails with regular nail lacquer.

You can put gel top coat over regular polish only if this regular polish is completely dry. If regular nail polish is still wet, meaning its liquid solvents do not evaporate away from the nails, the gel top coat will go over it and block these solvents from drying out.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)

Will regular nail polish dry under UV light?

Can you use UV light to dry regular nail polish? No, regular nail polish requires air drying, whereas gel polish contains a polymer that must be ‘cured’ by a UV or LED lamp for it to become hard. Regular nail polishes can’t be used with UV or LED lamps and it won’t dry any quicker from being put under the lamp.

Can you use gel top coat on bare nails?

Yes. With basecoat, 2 coats of color, and topcoat, gel polish adds an extra flexible and durable layer on the natural nails thus make it stronger as long as the gel polish is on the nails.

Can you cure regular nail polish with LED light?

Yes and no. Regular nail polish won’t cure under these lights. But, if you have regular nail polish on, you can apply a top coat of Shellac or Gel and cure it under the lamp to make your manicure last longer.

Can I use Essie gel top coat on regular polish?

The rich coating of Gel-Setter also supports its anti-chip properties. Plus, it can be used along with any nail polish.

Can you cure normal nail polish?

Only gel polish can be cured under a UV lamp. Regular polish dries on its own, while gel polish requires a lamp and won’t cure unless it’s sat under the lamp. Use a gel base coat, cure it, apply regular polish and wait for it to dry completely, then use a gel top coat and cure it.

Can you put shellac over regular nail polish?

With a regular manicure, your drying time at the salon is about 20 minutes, but it actually takes 24 hours for the solvents in regular polish to fully dry. If the solvents aren’t fully dry, then putting on a gel topcoat is going to seal in wet polish. Or the topcoat could just slip right off.
