How Do You Fix Clumpy Nail Polish?

Written by Tara

Hot water works wonders. If your nail polish has become dry and thick, then all you need is a bowl of hot water to fix it. Immerse your nail polish bottle in a bowl filled with hot water and leave it there for about 3 minutes. Next, gently roll the bottle back and forth between your palms to shake the polish in it.

The solution is pure acetone, but there are a few ways to handle it. First you can add just a few drops of nail polish remover (we’re talking two or three) directly to the bottle, then gently swirl or roll the polish (this is the shimmy method we mentioned) to incorporateā€”whatever you do, don’t shake it.

Generally How do you flatten bumpy nail polish? Dip the tip of your finger in a little bit of polish remover and rub it lightly over the smudged area to smooth it out. You can also use a Q-tip, but I feel that using your finger gives more control on how much polish you take off.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)

Why is my nail polish thick and clumpy?

If you store them upside down or on the side (please don’t throw them haphazardly in a drawer), it will cause clumps in the formula and drying at the neck of the bottle. Don’t leave the lid off for longer than necessary. Exposing your nail polish to air is one of the top reasons for the thickening of your polish.

How can I thin my nail polish without thinner?

Hot water. If rubbing the polish between your hands doesn’t quite do the job and you are out of lacquer thinner, hot water is a great trick. All you have to do is run the bottle under hot water to heat the polish. This will temporarily thin out the formula.

Can you add nail polish remover to nail polish to make it thinner?

If you don’t have a polish thinner or are in a real pinch, you can also use an acetone nail polish remover to thin your polish. Acetone polish remover can be found at any local drugstore or pharmacy. Add it to your nail polish one drop at a time and shake gently to mix just as you would a polish thinner.
